Working Holiday Schemes
What is a Working holiday scheme?
Under the working holiday schemes, young citizens of approved countries may travel to New Zealand for a holiday and undertake employment
during their stay.
What does it allow you to do?
Depending on the country you are from it will allow you to work in New Zealand for up to 12 months. Please find below the conditions for each country.
Who is eligible?
The following countries are eligible for the Working Holiday Schemes: Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands,
United Kingdom, Singapore, Germany and Italy.
Applicants must:
be aged between 18 - 30, and not be accompanied by children, and
provide evidence of sufficient funds (this varies depending on the scheme) to purchase return travel.
Holders of such permits:
are not able come to New Zealand for any further working holiday under the scheme, and
must not undertake permanent employment unless they apply for and obtain a work permit.
Ability to change status
Once in New Zealand holders of such permits may, at any time during the time of that permit, apply to change their status to that of:
a long-term temporary worker, or
a student, or
a resident, and will be considered under those immigration policies relevant to the type of permit applied for.

NZ Job Search assists participants with casual, non-professional employment and related support.
- A Job offer can be taken at any time during the 12-month Membership period. A “job offer” is defined as an offer of employment from 1 week up to 12 months duration.
- Job search assistance will be available for the 12-month membership period.
- Working Holiday Visa restrictions will make some participants unable to work positions longer than three months, despite adequate qualifications.
- Some jobs will require a job interview and New Zealand Job Search cannot accept responsibility for an unsuccessful outcome of this. If unsuccessful, this will not count as a job offer.
- The participant must be willing to accept any reasonable offer of employment. A “reasonable offer” is defined as a position meeting the participant’s qualifications within one of the following industries:
- - Fruitpicking
- - Factory Work
- - Labour Hire
- - Hospitality
- - Nanny / Au Pair
- - Hotel
- - Promotional Work
- - Call Centre
- - Basic Administration
- - Retail
- - Tourism
- - Adventure / Outdoors
- - TESOL – (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages)
- - Farm Work
- - WWOOF/FHINZ (a separate membership fee is applicable)
AND
- Location of your employment will depend on work experience, availability and seasonal times of the year.
- A refusal to accept a reasonable offer of employment will constitute the immediate forfeiture of the guaranteed job offer.
- A minimum English level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 is required for all front line speaking employment. Fruit picking, farm work and labour related employment would be offered to those whose English falls below this level. You may be required to sit an English test, which will be at the discretion of the recruitment consultant. This cost will be borne by the participant.
- New Zealand Job Search will ensure that the participant has a job offer within 14 days of arrival.
- Fruitpicking is offered in most regions in New Zealand. New Zealand Job Search has no control over the regions or seasonal availability. People wishing to partake in Fruitpicking or farm work agree to travel at their own expense to the location of employment.
- Transportation costs will be borne by the participant.
- Jobs for a shorter period of time will be available on request.
- Some industries require the purchase of a uniform/s or completion of an employment related course. This cost will be borne by the participant.
